Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post on Monday said that Chinese engineers were testing techniques to build the tunnel, the world’s longest one. The alleged plan was to divert the waters to the Xinjiang desert. Until now, China's longest tunnel is the 85-km Dahuofang water project in Liaoning province, while the world's longest tunnel is the 137-km main water supply pipe beneath the city of New York.
Wang Wei, a researcher who helped draft the latest Tibet- Xinjiang water tunnel proposal, which was submitted to the central government of China in March, said more than 100 scientists formed different teams for the nationwide consensus and research. He is one from the team which was led by China's top tunnelling expert, Wang Mengshu.

India being a riparian state, has already conveyed to China about the growing concern regarding dams built by the latter in and around Brahmaputra river called, Yarlung Tsangpo in China. The view was "to turn Xinjiang into California". The water will be diverted from the Yarlung Tsangpo River(The Brahmaputra's tributary in in China) in southern Tibet, which turns into the river Brahmaputra once it enters India, extending to the Taklamakan desert in Xinjiang.

But Hua Chunying, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson turned down all of the above plans. China today rejected it as "false and untrue".
According to NDTV's report, "The Chinese government started building a tunnel in the centre of Yunnan province in August that will be more than 600-km long. Researchers said building the Yunnan tunnel would be a "rehearsal" of the new technology, engineering methods and equipment needed for the Tibet-Xinjiang tunnel, which would divert the Brahmaputra river to the Taklimakan Desert in Xinjiang, it said."
China has been the not so notorious neighbor of India from past. However convincing the statement looks out to be, not only borders but the maritime boundaries are to be under strict vigilance. That's the need of the hour. Because prevention is better than cure.
