Will Delhi miss firecrackers this time?



Today's Delhi cracker ban did hurt sentiment of many a people, and it surely did! There is an increasing trend of so called learned elites going to Supreme courts specially in decrees involving Hindu customs and traditions which they feel are vestigial thereof. Sad part is, this clan is amongst the Hindu community itself, and they don't vouch for any collective responsibility. The gentleman who filed this case has Arjun Gopal as his name.

There is a copy of court proceedings dated 12th September 2017(Link below). It was prior to the judgement delivered today. Most of it suggests preventive measures to be practiced during festivities and many more such 'measures'. I don't know for how many number of times the PIL can be filed/entertained with same grievance. But I think this issue was taken up constantly right from 2015 until today’s judgement.


Supreme Court has led ban on 'manufacturing and selling' of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR


On reading through the bulletins and court proceedings in regards to Delhi cracker ban, just came across a department called "Department of Explosives" that exists having its head office at Nagpur and does have a subordinate office at Faridabad 30km from heart of Delhi or even the Supreme court premises, now called the PESO. If you visit their website you find a document called "Explosive Act 1884". Looks like this PESO issues out guidelines regarding all kinds of explosives.


Consider it my childish behaviour, but the document is devoid of the word 'firecracker' anywhere. Also, if we go through the court proceedings on 12th September 2017, on page 7 point 11) is study conducted by IIT-Kanpur named, “Comprehensive Study on Air Pollution and Green House Gases in Delhi” which further suggests that the pollution is least due to burning of crackers. There are many more such points we can stumble upon if we go through the detailed report(Link below)


I’m not writing this to conclude anything. But I’m very much exclaimed by all the mess that exists between government authorities, the aggrieved subjects and somewhat on part of judicial system too. Some people take it for their advantage. That’s what I wanted to highlight.

Diwali is a festival of lights. Also I acknowledge that burning crackers excessively (limit should be self-set reasonably) may cause health hazard. But there are more effective ways to curb pollution than thwarting burning of crackers. And I don’t know how the burning of crackers could be prevented by stopping local manufacturing of them!! Anyways, enjoy the festival coming, with no ill-will, safely and with a pure heart!!

    Well i really dont feel so..we have to take all possible measures to curb pollution and this is just one of them..and that too it is confined to NCR region..not to whole country where pollution levels are comparatively lower than our capital...our capital remains closed for at least 10 days every winter beacause of pollution..we must support all such measures including the diesel vehicles ban, stubble burning issue, etc. and not bring the communalism unnecessarily in it...

      Thanks for your feedback at first! But to put it very succinctly, the measure would only increase amount of burning of crackers in NCR. What difference would it make by merely banning manufacturing and sale? It would be a step gone wrong for & in the future.

    I think court has specificaly said that this is for studying whether if makes any difference...if it makes all should support govt to reduce pollution and iff it doesn't then all will get the chance next year to burn crackers...

      Thanks for your opinion at first! The verdict had to be a comprehensive one. The decision has a glitch, if you see. It says "ban on manufacturing and sale in Delhi." If you'd go in number crunching post Diwali cracker sales around Delhi this year, it will be higher than previous years this time, I bet!!

Do we have a choice?!

A more than a hundred year old organisation with such a wide network has to go to level that its president has to announce, giving away alms to people who want to travel to their hometown. Also the opposition in Maharashtra is doing more or less the same. The terrible and hideous pictures of politics are being depicted. Also the news channels want traction more than conveying the facts. Simple example of regional news. In tier 1/2 cities like Mumbai and Pune, there are many labourers who wanted to go to their hometown in North India.
